Recent events including the hiring of Ms. Nikole Hannah-Jones have highlighted a continued lack of support for faculty, staff and students of underrepresented populations at UNC. As a result, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (DEI-EXSS) feels compelled to:
- Agree with Faculty Chair Dr. Mimi Chapman and others that “faculty voice must govern the tenure process for academic integrity to have meaning”.
- Ask that the Board of Trustees revisit the matter of granting tenure to Ms. Nikole Hannah-Jones with the appropriate input from faculty and campus leadership.
- Reaffirm the Department of Exercise and Sport Science’s commitment to supporting and uplifting the voices of those that are underrepresented and those with traditionally minoritized identities.
